Design with Soul & Purpose

Our Story

Founded on the Gold Coast by Charl van Heerden, Uniqwa’s Head Designer, our brand was born from a vision to create furniture that is as meaningful as it is beautiful. Drawing inspiration from nature and global culture, Charl leads the creative design direction, ensuring each piece blends contemporary design with traditional craftsmanship.

Over the years, Charl and the Uniqwa team have built close relationships with skilled artisans across the globe, many in remote communities. These collaborations bring each design to life using time-honoured techniques, often passed down through generations.

Our commitment to sustainability is woven into every step of the process. We work with reclaimed, recycled, and responsibly sourced materials, transforming them into timeless pieces that carry the spirit of their origin.

Every knot in the timber, every handwoven pattern in natural fibre, and every weathered patina tells a story — one of heritage, sustainability, and artistry.

Sustainable by design

Design with Longevity in Mind

Our furniture is built to last — both in durability and style. Every design is created to transcend trends, encouraging customers to invest in fewer, better pieces that will serve their spaces for years to come.

Our Values & Sustainability

At Uniqwa Collections, every design choice is guided by a deep respect for nature, culture, and craftsmanship. We believe furniture should do more than serve a function — it should tell a story, support communities, and honour the planet.

Ethical Sourcing

We partner with trusted artisans and suppliers who share our commitment to responsible production. Our materials are selected for their sustainability, whether reclaimed from their past life or sourced from certified, responsibly managed plantations.

Reclaimed Materials

Many of our designs are made from salvaged timber, repurposed natural fibres, and vintage components. These materials carry with them unique histories — knots, weathering, patina, and other organic marks that make every piece one of a kind.

Low‑Impact Craftsmanship

We use traditional, time‑honoured techniques alongside modern innovations to minimise waste and avoid unnecessary chemicals. In some collections, we embrace ancient finishing methods, such as natural burning techniques, to achieve beautiful tones without synthetic stains.

Protecting Biodiversity

We are committed to never using rainforest timber or materials sourced from endangered habitats. Instead, we prioritise sustainable alternatives and support projects that protect and restore natural ecosystems.

Environmental responsibility, education & empowerment

Giving Back

At Uniqwa Collections, we believe that design should not only be beautiful and sustainable but also a force for good. Through Uniqwa Give, we partner with grassroots organisations and community projects that align with our values of environmental responsibility, education, and empowerment.

Our giving initiatives focus on creating meaningful, lasting change — from supporting community‑based artisan programs to contributing to projects that restore ecosystems and improve livelihoods. By working directly with trusted partners, we ensure every contribution has a tangible impact where it’s needed most.

Every piece you choose from Uniqwa helps us continue this mission, allowing us to give back to the communities, cultures, and environments that inspire our designs.

When design gives back, beauty becomes purpose.
